Let’s Get Physical
imagined by: James Mathias
Walking, it is good for you, it is fun.
My family decided that for the year 2005, we were going to stop fracking off and get back on the wagon of health, to accomplish this we decided to eat healthier and take a walk as a family every-single-day of the year.
The “walk” began innocently enough as a brisk 1 and 1/2 mile jaunt over the hills and through the woods. Then came February 1st and the “walk” was increased by half a mile daily, due to an unfortunate incident with Park Ranger service truck and our usual path of forward motion, forcing us off and to the left where a nice extra 1/2 mile goes through a beautiful forest service preserve.
I came to enjoy this part of the “walk” and it became our new path of least resistance, then on February 13th, Amy says “We should start walking the path 2 times each day once in the morning and once in the evening.” Of course, this was too much too soon for me. Not that I dislike exercise or spending time with my family, but because I am a chronic work-a-holic and the idea of spending more than 1 hour a day away from my beloved precious [work] was a pretty nasty system shock, thinking on my feet I said, “How about we compromise and we start the two times daily routine in March?” This bought me some time to get used to the idea, both mentally and physically.
So here we are 3 days into March, and we’re walking 4 miles a day, 2 in the morning, and 2 in the evening, and we alternate directions, just to keep it fresh, and also–I am convinced–to piss my legs off.
I enjoy greatly the time spent with my wife and sons, and I also appreciate the exercise, and I can feel my body getting stronger, and I am becoming lighter, and more productive, and I sleep better, well at least harder.
Not only have we stuck with our pseudo “New Years Resolution” but we have progressively increased it monthly. I joke and say “By December we will be running 4 miles (2 laps) in the morning and 4 miles in the evening.” Which is mostly in good humor, but a part of this old frame says I might not be too far off the mark.
So to quote a infamous, young, blonde, Australlian; “…Let’s get physical, I wanna see your body rock, let’s get physical…” in other words tell me about your exercise routines if and when you do have them.

We just purhcased a Bowflex, it’s an excellent piece of equipment. For me it’s been 30 minutes a day, every day, focusing on different groups of muscle. We just moved, but when we get the mini ramp built, it will be 2-3 hours a day on that.

Yeah we want to get a BowFlex as well, but that has to wait until we move to a larger space, as we couldn’t fit it in at the apartment.
But it is definately a purchase to be made.

Sorry, I probably shouldn’t be posting here but I just HAD to step in here and say NO to the Bowflex. Yes, I agree, tis an excellent workout machine and it DOES work well if you make consistent use out of it. The only problem I had is its price. I’m STILL having a problem with it because, after 3 years, I’m still paying it off ( with interest to boot! =D ).
My wife just recently made an amazing discovery; the door gym. Not only is it compact enough to fit ON YOUR DOOR ( hence the use of DOOR in the name ), it’s also about 98% cheaper than a Bowflex and still allows you to work out the same muscle groups.
I really wish I did some shopping around before I made one of my worst purchasing decisions. It’s so amazingly and fantastically simple; it’s just two units that latch onto the top and bottom of any door and is connected by 4 ( or more ) thick elastic bands by use of a pulley system. Both ends of the bands have clips on them so you can hook up your attachments on either end.
I was skeptical at first, but after a week of using it I actually found it to be a better workout than the Bowflex I bought.
The ONLY downside I found was the amount of resistance, but then again you could always buy extra bands. For $35 you just can’t go wrong.
I’d just hate to see ANYBODY spend so much money when there are quite a few decent, if not better AND cheaper, workout products.
Also, my compliments on the blog, sir.

A Google search shows that there are quite a few products going by the name of “The Door Gym,” could you please provide a link to the correct product? Anyways, in my opinion, our Bowflex Sport was worth every penny. Instead of paying $899 through Bowflex Direct, we spent $700 at The Sport’s Authority. Around here, Bowflex products can also be picked up at Sam’s Club, Walmart, and various other stores.

Well, they’re all pretty much the same thing so I didn’t think including the actual name was a big deal. I’ll admit, though, I don’t remember it. What I DO remember is that I wish I saw it before I bought my BF.
They’ve certainly gone down in price, though. My wallet is still screaming.

Well, for me walking isn’t so much exercise as a necessity. They say you should make 10,000 steps per day - my mum bought an ingenious little thing that counts your steps, just sit it on your body and it detects the rhythm - I usually clock up about 12,000 a day roughly.
It starts at 6:30am - wake up - wash, dress and out the door - walk about a quarter mile to the bus stop. Spend one hour on the bus, off in town centre, another quarter mile to next bus stop, another hour to my place of work, and about a half mile roughly from bus stop, to place of work. Tada 9:00am.
As a team leader in work I spend most of my day walking around to peoples desks - usually when their screaming for help so its brisk
I spend 3 hours per week doing a hard workout at the gym, rowing, running, cycling, weights, stretches.
I play once 5-a-side football (soccer) once a week for an hour which is good for the ol’ stamina.
Lastly, in an effort to shed about 3 stones in weight (not sure what that is in pounds …
I joined weightwatchers - and have been studiously attempting to eat healthier than the obligatory 5 take aways a week last year :S
All in all pretty good I think - I cant wait til my first child (due in May) is old enough to take out and do things like your doing now James, it’ll be such a great experience.

It’s mostly good times, but can be daunting at times.
