Disappointed

Recently I found this web-site by Rik Catlow. I was impressed by the design, by the art and content there-in. I spent about an hour looking at the art and reading the site, I was enjoying the site visually. And then…
I go to Style-Gala this morning and read the comments given on the redesign, only to discover that Rik’s site is a rip-off of another very mainstream site
I’m so very disappointed in Rik, and I want to tell him publicly that I think this is a damn shame, and I wish he hadn’t copied the lightbox demo site. It takes away from my overall feeling and enjoyment of the site and art, you created? See I don’t know if you actually created the content, and I’m less likely to trust what you have to say in the future.
I’m just plain disappointed.
I hope you see clearly, and create another design, and apologize for this discretion.

Damnit, I noticed that website this morning while browsing CSS Import and I really liked like the layout. I feel kind of stupid though, I’ve been to both websites and I hadn’t realized that Rik’s was a rip.

You didnt realise it because it’s not ripped. It’s clearly inspired by it, but not a rip.

Hi Tony, our definitions of rip obviously differ. I’m not going to argue that point.
The site, however, is clearly built off the concept and idea of another designer/developer, it’s layout, menu style, and overall design direction are all too similar to dismiss or call inspiration.
In my opinion this is a rip-off of another web-site. No matter how you approach it.
Inspired work, should never give be so similar that it’s source is apparent.
