Happy Father’s Day

imagined by: James Mathias

As I sit here on this random Sunday morning with my boys enjoying Star Wars, something I enjoyed as a boy it takes me back to my childhood and memories of my father come flooding in.

He’s from a generation of fathers that had fatherhood thrust upon them without preparation. Without having had strong fathers themselves. These men had to figure out fatherhood on their own.

I feel terrible that I have such a petty and disconnected relationship with my own father, and I think that is what pushes me to try and be the best father I can to these three boys whom I love more than I thought I was capable of.

I make mistakes, we all do. But I recognize my mistakes and try and fix them. I want my sons to grow up to be great men. I want them to say; “Dad, you were really there for us. You showed us love every day and you protected us from all things bad.” This is exactly the same thing our fathers wanted for us. But, they were part of a more self indulgent generation—self-centered.

I’ve been collecting comics for my sons. Liam gets Superman, Bryce loves Batman, and Cameron is going to like Spiderman. I have subscriptions to these books. I keep them untouched in plastic. I put them in a box. When each boy turns 21 I’ll hand them a box filled with mint-condition, sequential, untouched comics of their childhood heroes and say; “Even, when I didn’t say it I was thinking about you.”

I want my sons to know that the life I lead, everything I do is for them. All that I am is their father. There is nothing in this world I could do that is more important.

So although today is my day, it’s still all about my sons.

Thanks for listening, and I wish a very happy father’s day to all my friends that are fathers, online and off.

Rich, Roger, Ryan, Evan, Shawn, Scott, Luke, Matt, Kenny, Coop and Steve happy father’s day dudes.

If I forgot to name you, I apologize, brain’s a bit tired.

Great post hunny! Your boys love you and look up to you. You’re a awesome father and I am proud to have my sons with you. I even secret wish you were my dad. But then being married to you would be a tad awkward. smile

I am really proud of you. I think your sons are not only fortunate but also really blessed. You are not only a father, but a dad and a real man. I have a feeling your sons are going to grow up to be really wonderful men.
