Old West, Old Gansters, Old Men, Old Luggage, Old Monsters and an Old Story
imagined by: James Mathias
For this week’s NetFlix One Line Reviews I watched The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, American Gangster, No Country For Old Men, The Darjeeling Limited, 30 Days of Night and Beowulf.
Before I give my opinions, let me just make it clear I was highly anticipating five of the six films I watched this time around. The first five in fact, all but Beowulf.
Also “No Country For Old Men”, was not a Netflix rental, I saw it in the theater while I was in Nashville this past weekend.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford; “Beautifully shot. Amazing performances. Overlong. I really enjoyed this movie, I just wish it had been about 30 minutes shorter. A line I feel that was better than ”I drink Your Milkshake“ came from this film. ”Quench your mind of it boy. You don’t have the ingredients.“ Absolutely classic.”
American Gangster; “Not at all what the trailer leads you to believe. In fact I feel like this was a different movie. I didn’t like the ending at all.”
No Country For Old Men; “Not at all what I expected from the Cohen brothers. But, not terrible, just ends oddly. Mr. Bardem earned his Oscar for sure.”
The Darjeeling Limited; “OK film. But, I need to watch it again to fully grasp it. It’s definitely a slow burn. Do not watch this if you didn’t like The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou”
30 Days of Night; “One million times better than I expected it to be. I’m a huge fan of the Graphic Novels so I was worried, but they did the series justice. I think it helped that Steve Niles wrote the screenplay as well as the Novels.”
Beowulf; “Crap. Do Not Watch.”

I agree with you hunny, I thought Beowulf would be better, I love the story but the movie was disappointing.

And the Jesse James movie was visually stunning, but too long.
The Monsters in 30 Days of night were incredibly frightening, but I didn’t have nightmares which is a relief. :0
Next week will be better!

Yeah, I hated the end of No Country For Old Men. I can’t remember the ending of American Gangster, but I thought it was a decent film.
